This past season I had the opportunity to meet and fish with an experienced Kayak fisherman and guide. The sport is growing and gaining popularity, unless I am clueless and it has been for many years now. Either way it's damn cool! Fishing from a kayak offers anglers to go fishing without the bother of gas and towing a big boat along with all the other costs involved around it. What makes me interested in trying this experience is the more intimate contact with your surroundings. It's quiet, a good workout and you get very close to the fish.
James Pistilli has been fishing out his kayak for many years now, and has set the hook on many species of fish in all sizes.

The stories he told while we were fishing on the boat really got me curious to look deeper into this way of fishing. The pictures I found left me with my jaw on the floor and my eyes stuck on my monitor.

That is close quarters fishing with a swordfish. The thrill and adrenaline must be second to none. I hear the fish towed this angler's kayak for over 10 miles!

Musky from a kayak? Why not, actually I should say bring it on. It's impressive to see how these kayaks are rigged for fishing, rod holders and all. I would be nervous to sit in a kayak being the inexperienced kayak expert that I am while trying to keep my fishing gear in the boat instead ofin the water... along with the angler. Like anything else in this world, a little practice and I'm sure I could start to get the hang of it, at least enough to be able to cast my lures out without flipping over.
I would see the importance of safety and having a good eye on the weather and knowing what the predictions are, especially when fishing big rivers or lakes.
James was featured in a Q&A recently for the Kayak Angler online. Have a look
He also finished filming this summer for a Kayak fishing movie. I will be looking to get more information on this one soon, and will let you all know how to get your hands on it when it becomes available.
If James is available next season I think I might just give it a try. Sounds like a blast!
