Deep sea fishing - Mexico

Our fishing adventure started on a big charter boat affiliated with our hotel. This boat had two stories and fully equipped to face the brutal waters of the ocean. The fishing gear was made of heavy Penn reels and extra heavy rods with 80lb test. The mono which was 80lb used a 150lb steel leader. The technique consisted of trolling using five rods with baits all at different distances behind the boat. During this time of year: blue Marlins, sailfish, barracudas and Mahi Mahi are very active. We did not expect much, but just one fish would have made us happy.

We manage to hook two fish in four hours of fishing. Patrick caught the first fish, well half a fish! He had hook into a tuna which half way seemed to have been bitten in half by a shark. Patrick actually battled the shark for a while until the tuna was sliced in half thus giving the shark a well deserved meal. The second fish was a small barracuda, which made me plenty of joy and excitement. It was my first saltwater fish.

Later on during the week, we hired captain Tacho. A real Mexican working for his own business. His small boat is his primary bread earner for him and his family. I must say that our experience with this old fishing master was greatly appreciated.  The biggest difference between this charter and the big boat charter was the direct contact with the captain. Tacho was very devoted and took genuine pleasure in fishing and took the time to explain and show us the tricks of fishing on the ocean. Tacho has spent his whole life fishing, so he knew a thing or two about it. The results turned out to be outstanding!  In merely two hours I got two big barracudas and Patrick hooked a King Macro, without mentioning all the hit and runs. The fights are long and violent even, worthy of the largest of our freshwater fish with an exotic twist!
