It was the beginning of the season for bass fishing and my partner Mat and I went to a new location and a new lake trying to catch some nice large and smallmouth bass. What surprised me is the crystal clear water on this section of the St-Lawrence River. It’s completely different fishing in this type of condition compared to the Outaouais River or the Lake of Two mountains with its brown and thick tint. Arrived at the first spot near the weeds surrounding the “Îles-de-la-paix”, we spent much energy trying to stabilize our boat because of the wind. We finally had found a good spot really deep in the weeds and that’s where I caught this aggressive largemouth with a surface frog. What a hit! I was lucky to have with me my Shimano Curado reel to fight well in this thick weeded area. After the fight, we went to the opposite side of the river trying to catch a beautiful smallie. After 30 minutes, we finally arrived to the other side. Hell yes, it’s a bit long to cross a large river with a small 8hp motor! But it worth it because that’s where I caught two beauties with my favourite lure...the Senko. That spot had the perfect combination for smallmouth fishing: around 10 feet deep, rocks and sand...Thanks Pat for this spot (Patrick Éthier, ProBass Québec)

Note: be careful when you cross the St-Lawrence River...there are many transatlantic freighters as well as strong currents.
Tip: In these clear water conditions, polarized lenses are your best friends. They can help you spot fish.
