The Best Combo
Once
more, Mathieu and I were ready for the official day of the opening
season for bass fishing. This time, it is the lake St-François
on the St-Laurence River which will claim our excitement. Having
made notable modifications to his small craft, confidence was
in abundance. Indeed, Mathieu added a platform and had prepared
the front of the boat to accommodate an electric motor…
a real bass boat! Once on the water, we went in a channel very
close to the disembarkation ramp to tease some largemouth. Mathieu
seemed very at ease in this channel since he captured all the
largemouths of the trip, some times under our boat, other times
loan of a boathouse. The largest one attacked its black SPRO
frog very discreetly but battled strongly to avoid the weigh
in. The term “large mouth” applies perfectly to
this 4.5 pounds specimen!
A
little later, when we moved outside the channel, I saw a smallmouth
bass cruising on the sand dunes. My position raised on the platform
of the craft combined with my polarized lenses enabled me to
locate bass very accurately. It also should be specified that
the water of this lake is completely translucent especially
in absence of strong winds. It was the technique most adapted
in our situation; we tried to locate black spots contrasts with
the sandy colour bottom. Once the fish were located, a Senko
or a dark Tube of color natural combined with a discrete and
passive presentation made the deal. We captured several smallmouths
in approximately 6 feet of water. The fish were jumping all
the time and swimming like torpedoes! There’s nothing
like a combination of smallies and largemouths bass fishing,
especially in the same trip not far from each other.
