Hooked
on Fishin’
My
name is David Sarraf, and this is my fishing story…
Mike, a weightlifting buddy of mine, had constantly asked
me to go fishing with him. Prior to this, I had only been
fishing once, with Rob Spencer (my girlfriend’s
father) over two years ago (in his rookie days), but we
unfortunately didn’t catch anything. As a result,
I tried not to get too excited about fishing with Mike.
Thus, on June 28th, 2007, after two hours of unsuccessfully
trolling for musky in the Lake of Two Mountains, Mike
was getting frustrated, so he taught me the art of casting.
Within 30 seconds, he caught a small bass! That was enough
for me, considering I had never seen a (live) bass before.
However, when we were about to throw in the towel, Mike
decided to try trolling for musky one last time. Within
a couple of minutes, my rod, with the swimmin’ Joe
on the end, began pulling, and making the infamous sound
all fishermen live to hear. After an initial moment of
shock, I began reeling in the biggest fish I’d ever
seen: A 39 inch musky.
After
releasing the beautiful fish, I finally understood Rob’s
description of the adrenaline rush felt during, and after,
such an experience. Consequently, it was no longer Mike
asking me to go fishing…it was now vice versa. Thus,
two days later, on June 30th, Mike took me walleye fishing
on Lac St-Louis. During this trip, we caught four walleye,
four pike, two perch, and a bass. Then, just before calling
it a day, Mike, in an instance very similar to our musky
experience, decided to go for it one last time. Within
5 minutes, Mike felt a sudden jerk on his line, believing
it was stuck on rocks. However, after concluding his line
was going too fast in the opposite direction, he realized
he had caught something big. After attempting to reel
it in for about 45 minutes on a walleye rod, this massive,
shark looking fish appeared at the surface: A 51 inch
sturgeon. Thus, after catching seven fish species within
my first two fishing trips, I learned two valuable lessons:
Wear sunscreen and fishing is living!
