The wind was blowing out of the east at 30km/h and the skies were grey rain was on the forecast. It's been a long winter so we could not wait any longer. Pike season was open, so we headed out to the St-Lawrence in Ontario to get some E.lucius action.
After a full inspection of the boat everything looked in top shape and ready to go. Boat went in the water, key turns and the engine started without a hiccup! We examined the map and decide which spots we think will hold fish and set our course. It was a bumpy ride, the kind of ride where you don’t want to be picking your nose.
The first spot was a bay where the wind could not get to and had a large creek of water feeding into it. After about ten minutes Rob tagged his first fish, a small mouth. Obviously they are out of season so it was released immediately. A few more minutes pass by and we keep moving through the creek this time Kelly hooks a fish, another small mouth! They were good looking fish, very healthy and still holding fat bellies. Minutes after releasing the small mouth, Rob's spinning rod gives a tug so he sets the hook, the fight was on. Using light gear this pike was a lot of fun. We did not weigh or measure, but with the girth this fish had we estimate it was 8-10 pounds, a nice fish!
A few small other bass and pike followed after that in the creek but nothing to exciting. Then Rob hooks (accidently) a 15 pound carp. These fish give out a nice fight! It actually jumped out of the water which I did not know carp to do that, it was quite impressive.
Moving on to different spots we found a river mouth which was feeding into the St-Lawrence so we headed to the area. Arriving at the river mouth you could see plenty of submerged lumber, broken down trees, old reeds and the water was a bit murky with about nine feet of water. First cast, Rick pulls up another small mouth, immediately back in the water it goes.
Just a few casts later Rob lands another decent pike. Then so does Kelly!! The feed was on, they were hitting the lures right by the boat. We had been waiting for this all winter and it was finally happening.
It was only about an hour before the end that Loic finally started hooking fish. Two pikes back to back, and lost another fish which seemed to be more lethargic with decent head shakes... (Maybe a walleye... who knows).
Overall a fantastic opening day for us at fishingisliving.com, we could not ask for more!
